The first of the SEOC webinars took place on Thursday 25 April 2013.
The presentation was great. The webinar was about the IEEE EAB Awards program. The SEOC is a great vehicle to get this information to the Sections.

One of the EAB awards is called the Section Development Award. This award recognizes an IEEE Section for major contributions to the professional development of its members through the provision of outstanding products, services, and support in the areas of life-long learning, continuing education, and professional development.

Successful Student Branch and GOLD Congress 2012

At the end of July, Madrid was the proud host of Region 8 SBC. The local organising committee, together with SAC and GOLD committees, prepared a great program during which attendees learned and acquired new technical and soft skills.

The Congress was divided in several tracks –Student, GOLD, Professional Activities, and plenary sessions – so every attendee was able to find something interesting. It was four very intense and demanding days where students, aside learning, had a change to network among each other. Several social events served perfectly as a platform to exchange views and ideas between attendees.

Region 8 Student Branch Congress 2012 in Madrid, Spain

This year, at the end of July, Madrid was a proud host of the Region 8 Student Branch Congress. The local organizing committee, together with SAC and GOLD committees, prepared a great program where attendees learned much and acquired new technical and soft skills. SEOC meeting, April 2013

The first teleconference meeting in 2013 of the IEEE Educational Activities Board Section Outreach Committee (SEOC) was performed on April 10, 2013. The participants of the meeting were Mini Thomas (Chair), Prasanna Venkatesan (SEOC Member – MGA Rep), Michael Lightner (VP EAB), Karen Panetta (SEOC Member – R1), J. Kenneth Pigg (SEOC Member – R3), Fotini-Niovi Pavlidou (SEOC Member – R8), Antonio C. Ferreira (SEOC Member – R9), and Mirelle White (SEOC Staff Support). The teleconference focused on the SEOC responsibilities, aligned to Educational Activities Board (EAB), and the action items for 2013.

The IEEE R8 GOLD committee 2013 has compiled a concise operation guide for the new GOLD Affinity Groups to start their IEEE and GOLD activities. It guides you on how to report new Affinity Group officers, activities reporting, publishing, GOLD awards & recognitions, recommendations and the R8 GOLD Team.

This operation guide will assist you in your role and responsibilities to understand the working of a GOLD Affinity Group. It contains information on IEEE’s GOLD program, tools to help you in your role, and best practices to promote GOLD.

Kenya Section (EPICS) Empowering the visually impaired

On 13th February, IEEE Kenya officially launched its EPICS project to provide access for visually impaired persons to educational content on mobile devices with the signing of an MoU between IEEE Kenya, Automated Systems Research and the Kenya Society for the Blind.

Under the EPICS project, five IEEE student branch members will work under the supervision of ASR to implement an automated system that will enable visually impaired persons to access SMS and email-based content using low cost mobile phones. Additionally, eight visually impaired pre-university students from the Kenya Integrated Education Programme will also participate in the project.

The project is also being supported by SAMSUNG under their initiative to develop local content for the mobile platform.

It is envisaged that the system will ultimately become a revenue generation source for the society when the service is made available to the general public.
